Set down a lane in the hills above Monforte d'Alba with ravishing views of the Piemonte countryside, Il Grillo Parlante is a wonderful place owned and run by excellent hosts, Regula and Gilberto. On our first night, they served up a lovely dinner of antipasti, main course and dessert. Their wine list is short and local but as this is Barbaresca and Nebbiolo country and just a few kms from Barolo, there were no worries and the bottles were great value. The breakfast was a buffet featuring local/home-made products with plenty of juice and coffee to set us up for the day. During the day, we walked to Barolo through the vineyards that teem down the hills on the route and all over Piemonte. We also had dinner at the nearby and renowned Trattoria della Posta where Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon ate during episode 1 of their Trip to Italy. it was excellent. Back at Il Grillo, the rooms are comfortable and clean and the WiFi as clear as a whistle. We look forward to returning soon.
